Clothing Suggestions to Take on a Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb

If you plan on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, you will need to have the correct equipment and clothing for the trip. Obviously, you don’t want to pack too much because it can burden your ascent, but you don’t want to pack too lightly and forget something important. Here are some suggestions for what clothing to take on your quest to climb the “roof of Africa.”

Clothing Suggestions

If you take one of the many Mt. Kilimanjaro climb tours, then you probably won’t be lugging your own supplies up the mountain. The tour usually includes people who will take your belongings ahead of your group and prepare a tent for your nightly stop. However, you will still need to pack the appropriate clothing to make your climb comfortable.

Hiking Boots

You won’t need expensive mountaineering boots to climb the mountain, just a pair of good trekking boots will suffice. They should be waterproof, protect your ankles and have plenty of toe room so you are comfortable on both the ascent and descent. If you buy new boots for the climb, break them in before your trip.

Since you will be hiking for most of the tour, you may wish to wear a couple of pairs of socks at times to keep your feet from blistering. Thermal socks are suggested for the higher altitudes to help keep your feet warm. For most of the trip, regular athletic socks will be sufficient.

Fleece Jackets

Layering is best for your Mt. Kilimanjaro climb and fleece jackets are lightweight and warm. By layering your fleece with thermal shirts beneath them, you can remove them if you get too hot or add another if you get too cold on the ascent. A down jacket isn’t necessary if you layer your clothing.

Hats or Caps

You will want to take a sun hat on your trip to protect your face and neck from sun exposure. It will keep you from getting sunburned and possibly sun sick on the climb. Include in your pack a good sunscreen with the appropriate SPF for your skin type.

Climbing Trousers

Jeans are too heavy and will not dry well when you’re climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. You should instead invest in a couple of pairs of climbing trousers as they are lightweight and dry quickly. Also, take a pair of waterproof trousers, as well as a jacket, to help you stay dry if it rains.

The tour company you book with will give you a list of what you should take on your climb. They will usually include most of the necessary equipment for the tour. Use their suggestions for packing so your Mt. Kilimanjaro climb will be an experience you remember fondly for the rest of your life.
